James Sloan reminiscences, 1842-1865.

Reminiscences, several in the form of letters to Samuel Wilkeson, L.K. Haddock, and Charles D. Norton, of his early life on the Niagara Frontier. Includes an account of Gen. Bishop's attack on Black Rock during the summer of 1813, boating on the Niagara River and Lake Erie, and Lake Erie tides. Two letters were written to Sloan by Robert Orr of Kittanning, Pa. These contain some history of Kittanning and include notations by Sloan.

Came to Black Rock from Pennsylvania in 1810. Worked as a boatman on the Niagara River and Lake Erie, for the government during the War of 1812, and as a stone contractor during the construction of Buffalo Harbor. Judge Samuel Wilkeson was involved in shipping and the manufacture of stoves and engines. He was the first judge of Erie County, an early mayor of Buffalo (1836), and a representative in the State Assembly and Senate. He was instrumental in the construction of Buffalo Harbor and the choice of Buffalo as the western terminus of the Erie Canal, and he was active in the abolitionist movement as a member of the American Colonization Society. Born in New Hampshire; lived in Buffalo for about forty years. Helped to establish the Buffalo State Normal School; scholar and trustee of the Grosvenor Library. Born in Hartford, Conn. 29 Nov. 1820; moved with his family to Black Rock, where they resided for several years. Graduated from Union College in 1839; studied law in Buffalo with Horatio Shumway, and was admitted to the bar in 1843.
